DECISION MAKING SIMULATION

+90% of value creation in business comes from the decision making across the different levels in the organization. Still, few companies pay much attention to the processes, roles and pitfalls associated with decision making despite the growing body of evidence, that we are all prone to irrational biases and noise. This 2-day course will simulate an M&A transaction from deal generation to exit with one long transport case across all modules, insightful decision making exercises and real life stories from the facilitator’s shipping career to illustrate the learnings. The M&A content is a vehicle for learning solid decision making as all types of decisions are present, however, it does not constitute full insight into M&A processes. Chip & Dan Heath: Decisive; and McKinsey Quarterly “How one approach to M&A is more likely to create value than all others” are recommended reading.

STRATEGIC PROBLEM SOLVING

Strategic management has been around for the better part of a century and the field is packed with exciting insights and models. Yet strategies fail spectacularly every day partly because the underlying methodology and skillset – strategic problem solving – is not available to the public. McKinsey, BCG and Bain are renowned around the world for their sharp analyses and solid solutions across industries including shipping, where the focus is here. This 2-day course will use a combination of short transport cases, insightful personal exercises and real life stories from the facilitator’s shipping career to bring the 7 steps to life. Parts of Barbara Minto: The Minto Pyramid Principle and Ethan M. Rasiel & Paul N. Friga: The McKinsey Mind are recommended reading.

TRANSFORMING THE ORGANISATION

Transformation may just be the very last management frontier. We know how to solve business challenges of any kind at the intellectual level, but the actual change from any past state to a brighter future consistently eludes us. The reason is simple. Change is not just intellectual and does not happen in a vacuum. Any change or transformation is impacted not only by how you structure the change initiative itself but also the corporate culture and the irrational resistance in any organisation. This 2-day course will use a combination of short transport cases from participants current challenges, insightful transformation exercises and real life stories from the facilitator’s shipping career to underline the learning points. John Kotter: Accelerate; and Daniel Kahneman: Thinking, Fast and Slow are recommended reading.

INNOVATION IN ACTION

Innovation has always been an exciting and business critical topic. The recent rise of technology firms with new value propositions and business models has captured the imagination of the world far beyond top management. But it is also one of the most widely misunderstood areas with little knowledge about how innovation can flourish inside companies – both at corporate and process level. In this course the focus is on the 3I model originally pioneered by the world’s largest strategic design agency, IDEO, and later adopted by all the other top global innovation companies like Designit and Frog. This 3-day course will use a combination of short transport cases, insightful innovation exercises and real life stories from the facilitator’s shipping career to bring the 3I model to life. Parts of Christian Madsbjerg & Mikkel Rasmussen: The Moment of Clarity; Edward De Bono: Lateral Thinking & Serious Creativity; and Larry Keeley: The Ten Types of Innovation are recommended reading.

ENERGY ECONOMICS AND TRADING

The aim of this two-day programme is to give a well-rounded view the economics, trading, pricing and risk management of energy commodities. Most of the syllabus focuses on the three key hydrocarbons (oil and products, natural gas and coal), which together account for over 85% of world primary energy consumption. However, we will also look at electricity markets, where coal and gas are major inputs, and the role of renewable and alternative energies. We start with an overview of energy demand, which will set the scene for the challenges facing energy over the next 20 years. We continue with a look at the economics of upstream supply of oil, gas and coal, including investing under uncertainty and the presence of either royalty/licensing or PSC regimes. From the upstream, we move to the downstream sector and look at refining economics.

On the second day we focus initially on the physical trading of energy commodities, including contracts and pricing, before turning our attention to the electricity industry, which is the largest downstream user of coal and gas, and to renewables which play an increasing role in electricity generation. We conclude with a discussion on energy trading and risk, including a detailed view of derivative products and how they are used for energy price risk management.
